Overview & Scope

This Privacy Policy explains how Bitewise (“Bitewise,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, uses, shares, and protects personal information when you use the Bitewise mobile apps for iOS and Android, our website at joinbitewise.com, and the related services we provide (together, the “Service”).

Bitewise is a photo-first nutrition tracking app: you snap a photo of a meal, our AI estimates the portions and macros, and you track your day with a single goal ring. We built Bitewise to be private by default — we show no ads, and we never sell your personal data.

This policy applies to everyone who uses the Service. By using Bitewise, you agree to the collection and use of information as described here. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

Information We Collect

We collect information you provide directly, information generated as you use the Service, and a limited amount of information from third parties such as app stores and our payment processor.

Account information

When you create an account, we collect your email address and authentication details (such as a password hash or a sign-in identifier from Apple or Google). You may optionally provide a display name and profile details. You may also give us goal-related information — such as a target, height, weight, age, or activity level — so the app can personalize your daily ring.

Food logs, meals & photos you upload

The core of Bitewise is your food diary. We collect the meals you log, the photos you take or upload for estimation, the AI-generated portion and macro estimates, any edits or notes you add, and the timestamps and history that power your daily ring and weekly trends. This content is yours, and you can export or delete it at any time.

Subscription & payment information

When you start a free trial or paid subscription, payment is processed by a third-party payment processor and, where applicable, by the Apple App Store or Google Play in-app purchase systems. We receive confirmation of your subscription status, plan, renewal dates, and partial details such as the card brand and last four digits. We do not collect or store your full card number, and we never have access to your complete payment credentials.

Device & usage data

We automatically collect technical information when you use the Service, including device type and model, operating system and version, app version, language and region settings, a device or installation identifier, IP address, crash reports, performance diagnostics, and information about how you interact with features (such as screens viewed and actions taken). We use this to keep the Service reliable, secure, and improving.

Cookies & similar technologies

On our website we use cookies and similar technologies (such as local storage and lightweight analytics) to keep the site working, remember preferences, and understand aggregate usage. You can control cookies through your browser settings. Our mobile apps use device-level identifiers and SDKs rather than browser cookies for similar purposes.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, operate, and maintain the Service, including estimating portions and macros from your meal photos and powering your daily ring and weekly trends.
  • Create and manage your account, and authenticate you when you sign in.
  • Process your free trial, subscription, billing, and renewals, and prevent fraudulent or unauthorized payments.
  • Personalize your experience based on the goals and preferences you set.
  • Communicate with you about the Service, including transactional messages, security alerts, and support responses.
  • Send product updates, tips, and offers where permitted — you can opt out of marketing messages at any time.
  • Monitor, debug, and improve the Service, including improving the accuracy of our AI estimates and developing new features.
  • Maintain the safety, integrity, and security of the Service and protect against abuse, fraud, and unlawful activity.
  • Comply with our legal obligations and enforce our terms.

We do not use your food logs or meal photos to serve you advertising, and we do not sell your personal data.

Legal Bases for Processing

If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or another region with similar laws, we process your personal information under the following legal bases:

  • Contract. To provide the Service you have signed up for, including managing your account and subscription, we process information that is necessary to perform our agreement with you.
  • Consent. Where required, we rely on your consent — for example, for certain marketing communications or optional analytics. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interests. We process some information to operate, secure, and improve the Service, prevent fraud and abuse, and understand how the Service is used, provided these interests are not overridden by your rights.
  • Legal obligation. We process information where necessary to comply with applicable laws, regulations, and lawful requests.

How We Share Information

We share personal information only in the limited circumstances described below. We never sell your personal data.

  • Service providers & sub-processors. We share information with trusted vendors who process it on our behalf — for example, cloud hosting, AI inference, image storage, analytics, customer support, and email delivery. They may only use it to provide services to us and must protect it.
  • Payment processors. Our third-party payment processor and the relevant app store process your payment to manage your subscription. They handle your payment credentials under their own privacy policies.
  • App stores. The Apple App Store and Google Play process information related to your download, in-app purchases, and subscription management.
  • Legal & safety. We may disclose information if we believe in good faith that it is necessary to comply with the law or a lawful request, enforce our terms, protect the rights, property, or safety of Bitewise, our users, or the public, or detect and prevent fraud or security issues.
  • Business transfers. If Bitewise is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you of any change in ownership or use of your personal data.

We never sell your personal data. We do not rent, trade, or sell your personal information to third parties, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Data Retention

We keep your personal information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the Service. After that, we retain information only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes described in this policy — for example, to comply with legal, tax, or accounting obligations, resolve disputes, prevent fraud, and enforce our agreements.

When you delete your account, we delete or anonymize your food logs, meal photos, and personal information within a reasonable period, except where we are required or permitted to retain certain records. Backups containing your information are purged on a rolling schedule.

Data Security

We use administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect your personal information, including encryption in transit, access controls, and the principle of least privilege for our team and systems. Payment credentials are handled by our payment processor and never stored in full on our systems.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. You can help protect your account by using a strong, unique password and keeping your device and app up to date. If we become aware of a breach that affects your information, we will notify you and the relevant authorities as required by law.

Your Rights & Choices

You have meaningful control over your information. Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights:

  • Access & portability. Request a copy of the personal information we hold about you, and export your food diary in a portable format.
  • Correction. Update or correct inaccurate or incomplete information, including directly within the app.
  • Deletion. Delete specific entries, or delete your entire account and the data associated with it.
  • Objection & restriction. Object to or ask us to restrict certain processing, including direct marketing.
  • Withdraw consent. Where we rely on consent, withdraw it at any time without affecting prior processing.

GDPR (EEA & UK)

If you are in the EEA or UK, you may exercise the rights above and lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. We will respond to verified requests within the timeframes required by law.

California (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we collect, to access and delete it, to correct it, and to be free from discrimination for exercising your rights. We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising, so there is no need to opt out of a sale — but your other rights still apply.

To exercise any of these rights, use the in-app controls or email us at hello@joinbitewise.com. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request, and you may use an authorized agent where the law allows.

International Data Transfers

Bitewise operates globally, and the information we collect may be processed and stored in countries other than the one in which you live, including the United States. These countries may have different data protection laws than your own.

When we transfer personal information across borders, we use appropriate safeguards required by law — such as Standard Contractual Clauses or equivalent mechanisms — to ensure your information remains protected.

Children's Privacy

Bitewise is not directed to children, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under 16 where a higher age applies under local law). The Service is intended for adults and older teens who can lawfully agree to these terms.

If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us at hello@joinbitewise.com and we will delete it.

Third-Party Links & Services

The Service may contain links to, or integrate with, third-party websites and services that we do not control — including app stores, payment processors, and authentication providers. This policy does not apply to those third parties, and we are not responsible for their privacy practices.

We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party service you interact with through Bitewise.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the Service evolves or as legal requirements change. When we make a material change, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email.

Your continued use of the Service after an update takes effect means you accept the revised policy.
